Collection of LABAL

From the Autumn/Winter 2020 collection Blurred Bodies, this piece is inspired by abstraction and exaggeration of human anatomy. To make the textiles, she takes inspiration from the ability of skin to morph – expanding, drooping, and sagging. The colourful strips of draped fabric sewn together form an oversized and fluid silhouette, representing the skin’s natural folds, and aiding in creating an organic form. The collection uses neoprene fabric to create volume and structure, while the satin fabric lining creates a draped look for a contrasting dimension. The blend of satin and neoprene fabrics further informs the contradiction between architecture and organic drapery.

Latika Balachander was born in India but came into her own as a fashion designer while pursuing a BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. Balachander won the Men’s Folio Designer of the Year Award in 2020 for her thought-provoking graduate collection, titled Blurred Bodies, that was inspired by her relationship with her grandmother.
